Trakiyska Slava (Тракийска Слава), meaning “Thracian Glory” in Bulgarian, is a rare red grape variety developed during Bulgaria’s mid-20th-century viticultural breeding efforts. It results from a cross between Pamid × Mavrud, which combines Pamid’s soft texture and early ripening with Mavrud’s structure, depth, and age-worthiness. Though it was never widely planted, Trakiyska Slava holds historical importance and produces regionally expressive, medium- to full-bodied red wines that reflect Bulgaria’s winemaking legacy.

Wines from Trakiyska Slava offer a harmonious blend of Mavrud’s rustic intensity and Pamid’s lighter texture, resulting in an approachable yet structured wine, often with subtle earthy complexity.

Food Pairing
It pairs beautifully with roast pork, chicken stew, moussaka, or grilled mushrooms. It complements traditional Bulgarian dishes like kavarma or stuffed peppers, especially those with fresh herbs or tomato-based sauces.
What to Look For?
Expect a clear ruby color, gentle aromas of cherry and herbs, and a rounded palate supported by fine tannins. It develops mild earthiness, soft spice, and leaf-litter complexity with age.
Cellaring Potential
Most wines are best enjoyed within 3–4 years, though structured versions may hold slightly longer and soften gracefully over time.
Blending Partners
No widely documented blends exist, but it may be paired with Mavrud in local cuvées to balance the fruit profile and structure. Home winemakers also blend it with Mavrud for added richness.
Breeding Background & Regional Context
Created when Bulgaria was developing regional hybrids, Trakiyska Slava reflects a desire to produce adaptable, balanced red wines suited to Thracian climates. While no longer widely cultivated, it remains a grape of historical and cultural value.
Alternative Grapes
If you enjoy Trakiyska Slava, explore Rubin for a deeper structure with spice or Gamza for a lighter, more aromatic take on Bulgarian reds. Both offer regional expression with varying intensity.
