Melnik 82

Мелник 82
[MEL-neek eighty-two]

Melnik 82 is a modern red grape variety developed in Bulgaria as part of a series of hybrids aiming to improve the viticultural qualities of the native Shiroka Melnishka Loza (Broad-leaved Melnik). Created through a cross between Shiroka Melnishka Loza and the French variety Jurançon, Melnik 82 is distinct from Melnik 55 (Ranna Melnishka Loza, Early Melnik). It ripens more consistently and earlier than its ancestral parent while maintaining a deep connection to the terroir of the Struma Valley.

Melnik 82 - The Refined Face of the Melnik Lineage

Melnik 82 offers a more modern interpretation of the classical Melnik (Shiroka Melnishka) profile – it is juicy yet composed, with gentle spice and forest fruit aromatics. Its balanced acidity and moderate tannins make it versatile and food-friendly, while its expression of place remains unmistakably southern Bulgarian.

Food Pairing

This variety pairs well with grilled meats, mushroom dishes, veal, and pork tenderloin. It complements rosemary-seasoned stews, roasted vegetables, and cheeses like kashkaval or comté, matching both herbal and umami-rich profiles.

What to Look For?

Expect a vivid ruby color, aromas of red and black fruits, and subtle herbal complexity. Wines with mild oak aging show tea leaves, spice, or cedar notes and are typically smooth and structured.

Cellaring Potential

Most wines are best enjoyed within 4–6 years, though structured examples with oak aging may evolve gracefully for up to 8 years.

Blending Partners

Melnik 82 is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Shiroka Melnishka Loza, contributing elegance and red-fruited lift to regional blends.

Variants & Clones

Melnik 82 is sometimes confused with Melnik 55 (Early Melnik) but is genetically distinct. It belongs to a parallel breeding program with a different French crossing.

Alternative Grapes

If you enjoy Melnik 82’s balanced profile, red fruit, and savory edge, try Cabernet Franc or Zweigelt.
