Melnik 1300, also known as Yubileen Melnik 1300, is a modern Bulgarian red grape variety created to celebrate the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state. It was developed through a cross between Shiroka Melnishka Loza (Broadleaf Melnik) and the Saperavi. Bred at the Sandanski Institute, Melnik 1300 was designed to combine the regional character and aromatic profile of Broadleaf Melnik with the deep color, acidity, and structure of the Georgian Saperavi. This resulted in a red grape variety capable of producing age-worthy, powerful wines with a Bulgarian identity.

Melnik 1300 is more concentrated and structured than other Melnik hybrids like Melnik 55 or Melnik 82. It produces serious, cellar-worthy wines, often aged in oak to enhance their density and spice. The palate shows ripeness balanced by grip and freshness.

Food Pairing
Melnik 1300 pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef cheeks, wild boar stew, or stuffed peppers with herbs and tomato sauce. Its firm structure and warm profile also suit aged Bulgarian cheese (kashkaval), dry-smoked meats, and grilled mushrooms.
What to Look For?
Look for a deep ruby color, aromas of black fruit and earthy spice, and a bold, structured, and persistent palate. Oak-aged versions add clove, vanilla, and cedar layers with age.
Cellaring Potential
Melnik 1300 has excellent aging potential. Many wines reach their peak after 6–10 years, gaining complexity, polish, and softness over time.
Blending Partners
It is occasionally blended with Melnik 55 and Melnishki Rubin to enhance complexity, but many winemakers prefer to bottle it varietally to showcase its strength and structure.
Alternative Grapes
Try Melnishki Rubin or Rubin for similarly bold Bulgarian reds with spice and tannic structure. Internationally, Cabernet Franc or Tannat fans will appreciate the grip and ageability.
