Located in the village of Uzundzhovo, near Haskovo in southern Bulgaria, the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God is a remarkable testament to Bulgaria’s layered history. Originally constructed as a mosque during the Ottoman era, this architectural marvel was transformed into an Orthodox church in 1906, blending Islamic and Christian design elements uniquely and harmoniously.
A Journey Through Time
The site initially hosted a Christian temple, which was destroyed in 1593 by the Ottoman Empire. In its place, a mosque was erected as part of a large caravanserai complex, serving as a hub for merchants and travelers. The renowned Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi described Uzundzhovo in the 17th century as a bustling town with a significant caravanserai and mosque, highlighting its importance in regional trade routes.
After Bulgaria’s liberation in 1878, the Turkish population left the area, and the mosque fell into disuse. In the early 20th century, the local community converted the abandoned mosque into a church, culminating in its consecration in 1906.
Architectural Highlights
The Uzundzhovo Church is renowned for its unique architectural features, combining elements from its Islamic origins with Orthodox Christian additions. The structure boasts a spacious interior with high domes and arches, characteristic of mosque architecture, incorporating Christian symbols and iconography. During restoration efforts in 2007, two medieval Arabic inscriptions with religious-philosophical themes were discovered, adding to the site’s historical intrigue.
A notable feature is the intricately carved iconostasis by Tryavna master Darin Bozhkov, considered one of Bulgaria’s largest and most impressive. The church’s stained glass windows depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, enhancing its spiritual ambiance.
